Abstract
The development of porous plastic implantmaterials and ceramic implant materials gave rise to new prostheses for the reconstruction of the middle ear chain. The search for the ideal material is still going on, but if we want to use biomaterials we have to regard two types of implant criteria, biomaterial criteria and surgical criteria and only a good combination of these criteria will give lasting results. With regard to these criteria it is clear that also in the middle ear different types of materials may be used depending on the surgical aims.
