On Alloplasts for Otology

  • Chapter
Biomaterials in Otology

Abstract

The physiology and geometry of the middle ear presents formidable problems for use of alloplasts in reconstructive surgery. Although as early as 1963, a detailed histological comparison of the reactions of various polymeric alloplasts implanted so as to replace a peritoneal defect in rodents was published1, analogous information for the middle ear is not yet available. To this need must be added firm acoustical data for the various designs of ossicular replacement implants which have come into widespread clinical use.
