Abstract
Definitions are important and in this presentation the word education means the mastery of skills and an understanding of their underlying principles. The word computer refers to a tool - or instructional device -that can be used by teacher and learner during the educational process. My task now is to discuss the role of the computer in instructional development, the process of improving instruction, in anaesthesiology. To help do this I will describe an instructional model (fig. 1), which will be used to indicate the possible role of the computer in educating trainee anaesthetists. This model is a combination of those described by De Cecco1 and Blondin2. First it introduces the entering behaviour of the trainee and then follows a sequence dealing with identification of educational problems, instructional objectives, instructional procedures of which computer assisted learning is the one concentrated on, and lastly performance assessment.
