Abstract
In each of the fields - physiology, ethology, pathology and production - indicators of animal welfare have been proposed and their scientific value tested and discussed. We will try first to summarize the major results in each case, their importance for the practical evaluation of well-being, the questions arising, and the topics requiring further research. In a second part, we will be concerned with the practical use of such indicators in the assessment of welfare and in the recommendations to the regulation makers.
