Large Intestine and Anal Canal: Dysplasias and Malignant Neoplasms

  • Chapter
Atlas of Gastrointestinal Pathology

Part of the book series: Current Histopathology ((CUHI,volume 6))

Abstract

Most, if not all, large bowel adenocarcinomas unassociated with other disorders arise from pre-existing adenomas; the development in these of dysplasia prior to carcinomatous change has been discussed in Chapter 19. There are, however, a group of cancers arising in association with chronic inflammatory bowel disease in which dysplasia is an important feature and it is also necessary to discuss the recently described ‘transitional’ change in large bowel epithelium adjacent to neoplasms.
