  • Chapter

Part of the book series: Tasks for vegetation science ((TAVS,volume 9))

Abstract

Since the first international symposium on the biology and management of mangroves, held in Hawaii in 1974, there has been a far greater awareness of the ecological role and significance of mangroves, and the urgent need for the application of sound management practices to ensure that mangrove environments are not depleted or destroyed.

(Paper prepared for Second International Symposium on biology, and management of mangroves and tropical shallow water communities, Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea, July 1980).
