Abstract
Eucheuma is a genus of tropical seaweeds which grow on coral reefs, most abundantly from the lowest tide level to 1–2 m deep in the sublittoral zone. It occurs in the regions of the south of China, for example, Hainan Island, the Xisha Isands and Taiwan (Xia, 1963). Being long considered an item of food in our country, in recent years Eucheuma has also been used as raw material for the production of carrageenan.
