Some aspects of the ecology of ricefields

  • Chapter

Part of the book series: Monographiae Biologicae ((MOBI,volume 57))

Abstract

Rice is the second largest cereal crop in the world after wheat. Many monographs and books have been devoted to the scientific aspects of rice cultivation. A few of these are: Angladette (1966), Anon (1975a, b), Bertin et al. (1976), Blankenberg (1933), Denishko (1954), Eregin (1950) and Grist (1975). There is, however, relatively little published on the ecology of ricefields, and of these most are very recent publications. The most recent and comprehensive studies on ricefield ecology are the monograph by Heckman (1979) and the proceedings of a symposium (Furtado 1980). Fish culture in ricefields has attracted considerable interest because of the economic incentives. The literature on this subject and a discussion of the methods is available in the studies of Coche (1967) and Meijen (1940) and the bibliographies of Fernando et al. (1979) and Temprosa & Shehadah (1980). The agronomic aspects of rice cultivation have a very extensive literature. Some of the major works are referred to above.
