Abstract

As the term ‘ecology’ refers to the relationships between organisms and their environment, it cannot be used for a disease, and so the phrase ‘ecology of disease’ is incorrect, as pointed out by Audy (1958). However, many have used it in that context in the past. This chapter therefore discusses some ecological aspects of two important vector borne diseases of man in Sri Lanka, namely malaria and filariasis, and briefly refers to a few others which are of ecological interest because animal reservoirs are involved, making them important (or potential) zoonoses.
