Summary
Major gaseous pollutants, total suspended particulates, their size distribution, their composition and the size distribution of their constituents have been investigated for 14 smog periods, i.e. periods whereby the mean So2 and/or mean TSP levels exceed 400/µg/m. These smog conditions lasted from 6 up to 100 hours. They were caused either by the emissions of the city of Berlin proper or by advection of pollutants from other source regions, or a mix of both. They occured during anticyclonic weather conditions with restricted vertical mixing and low to moderate wind velocities.
