Abstract
The classification of optical and magnetic energy levels, selection rules and spectral intensities, e.g., in mixed valence compounds and magnetic crystals, requires nowadays more careful group-theoretical arguments. One of the needs in this respect is a deeper understanding of certain abstract group properties of entities equally useful for physicists and chemists called the discrete double groups.
