Abstract

In this chapter we will discuss the distribution of temperature in an ice sheet. This topic deserves attention because the rate of deformation depends strongly on temperature. Moreover, the presence of basal water can lead to sliding. Melt water then acts as lubricator and the horizontal iceā€”mass discharge may increase dramatically. In order to calculate the amount of melt water that is produced, the heat budget of the ice sheet has to be known.
