Abstract
In a recent special article in the New England Journal of Medicine, Eric J. Cassell [4] from the Department of Public Health, Cornell University Medical College in New York has written about the nature of suffering and the goals of medicine. Dr Cassell emphasizes in his paper that the relief of suffering and the cure of disease must be seen as twin obligations of a medical profession that is truly dedicated to the care of the sick. He also reminds us that the obligation of physicians to relieve human suffering stretches back into antiquity. He is somewhat disturbed by the comparatively small amount of research devoted to this area, the topic of suffering. He points out that despite a certain overlap, there is a distinct difference between pain and suffering as phenomena.
