Abstract

Theoretical and experimental methods for the measurement and analysis of diffuse x-ray and neutron scattering have progressed greatly in the last few years. It is now possible to obtain very detailed information on local atomic arrangements in concentrated and, in some cases, fairly dilute metallic alloys, ceramics and intermetallic compounds. The advent of synchrotron radiation promises substantial savings in data collection times and hence makes possible a whole new class of experiments, too time consuming to be carried out with laboratory apparatus. In this paper, the most recent developments in data analysis will be reviewed. Additionally, experimental procedures for both laboratory and synchrotron environments will be discussed.
