Abstract

Ethylene is considered to be one of the dominating hormones in controlling ripening in climacteric fruits like apples. However, it is difficult to elucidate the regulatory function of ethylene in the various biochemical processes of fruit ripening in the presence of endogenous ethylene. In order to prevent apples from entering the stage of autocatalytic ethylene production, two methods were used:

  • storage under low or hypobaric pressure (LPS) as described by Burg and Burg (1966).

  • treatment of apple fruits on the tree with the ethylene biosynthesis inhibitor AVG (aminoethoxyvinylglycine), introduced by Lieberman et al. (1975).
