Role of Sucrose in the Metabolism of IAA-Conjugates as Related to Ethylene Production by Tobacco Leaf Discs

Abstract

Sucrose was found to increase ethylene production, acting synergistically with IAA in tobacco leaf discs (5). It has been previously demonstrated in various systems that auxins, conjugated to different amino acids, exhibited IAA activity (3,4). Subsequently, it was found that IAA conjugates, formed by tobacco leaf discs in response to exogenously applied free IAA, could induce ethylene production (1). The present study was conducted to determine: (a) The mode of action of endogenous IAA conjugates in inducing ethylene production; (b) the effect of sucrose on IAA metabolism and IAA conjugates; and (c) the level of IAA and IAA conjugates in the leaf tissue.
