Abstract

Scleroderris canker caused by the fungus Gremmeniella abietina has caused major damage to pine and spruce forests in Europe since the original report by Brunchorst in 1888. The disease seems to have been most damaging to Pinus nigra, P. sylvestris, P. cembra and other conifer stands especially when the trees were planted as exotics. Disease epidemics have been periodic throughout the European countries and epidemics appear to be primarily related to years with favorable climatic conditions for infection combined with the availability of highly susceptible hosts.
