Abstract

The service functions of forestry may be considered under two broad headings:

  • — the protection and, where practicable, the improvement of the environment (proctection against erosion by water and wind, conservation of wildlife and landscape etc.);

  • — the use of forests for recreation which is particularly important near towns and in rural areas frequented by tourists.
