Abstract
The theory discussed in this chapter is intended to give insight in the best way of working of a device which produces lift, thrust or any other prescribed force action. We assume the fluid to be inviscid and incompressible. First we have to define what will be called the best way of working of a device. We restrict ourselves to the minimization of a simple cost function, namely the kinetic energy losses per unit of time.
