Abstract

Plasmodium species which cause malaria have a complex life cycle part of which is spent in the invertebrate host and part in the vertebrate. The invertebrate host has a constitutive defense against infection which includes physical and biochemical barriers, phagocytic and humoral deterring elements but appears to lack an inducible system comparable to that present in higher vertebrates. In general, mosquitoes of various strains are either susceptible or resistent to infection with a given plasmodium but unfortunately infection of mosquitoes does not result in disease and death of the vector. The infection of the invertebrate by the Plasmodium is not generally considered to invoke an immunological response and will thus not be considered further in this assay.
