Abstract
In this chapter it is not intended to give an account of the many factors governing malaria transmission since such a review has been provided in the chapter on ‘The Importance of Malaria in the World’ in Vol. 1 of Malaria (ed. J. Kreier, Academic Press, 1980). However, an attempt is made here to cover the current malaria situation in the world, and recent results of applied research which have relevance to the epidemiology of malaria. A section is also devoted to the distribution of drug resistant Plasmodium falciparum as this problem is becoming one of the most serious obstacles to curbing mortality and suffering from malaria.
