Abstract

In the infant and young child, the cardiovascular response to stress is determined by the state of structural development of a triad of elements — the pulmonary vascular bed, the systemic vascular bed and the myocardium. A chronic hemodynamic change will in turn disturb the normal process of vascular and myocardial growth and remodelling. Therefore, the ability to advantageously manipulate the developing circulatory system both functionally and structurally is the goal of current patient management and future research.
