Chemistry of Glasses

Abstract

Density is the most frequently measured property of glass. It can be measured quickly and accurately (up to three places of decimals even in a moderately equipped laboratory), and is quite often used in the quality control of commercial glass manufacture. Systematic studies of the variation of the properties of simpler glasses with composition have produced large amounts of data, which it was hoped would provide information pertinent to the problem of the constitution of glass. This hope has not always been justified.
