Excretion in Insects

Abstract

Certain chemical substances are produced in excessive quantities in animal tissues as a consequence of life processes, and must be eliminated from active metabolic sites before they cause problems for the organisms involved. The concentration at which these substances may become obtrusive varies widely depending upon the chemical nature and state of the specific substance. For example, ammonia is quite toxic at low concentrations and must normally be disposed of rapidly. On the other hand, uric acid or urates can apparently build up to quite high concentrations internally and still not cause death or major metabolic derangement. Among animals, elaborate systems have been developed to accomplish the voiding of metabolic wastes. They are usually referred to as excretory systems, although it should be remembered that the respiratory system often performs an essentially equivalent function in the elimination of carbon dioxide. While the latter is obviously an important function, it will not be considered in this review since it is usually treated as a part of respiratory exchanges (Bursell, 1970).
