Abstract
Coakroaches, especially Periplaneta americana, have been subjects of behavioural experimentation in which the underlying neural bases for behavioural actions are explored relative to motor systems (see Chapter 11) and sensory information processing (see Chapter 9). The active movement of cockroaches in time and space is a most important aspect of their behaviour because these activities lead to and are components of all other types of more complex behaviour. This chapter begins, therefore, with spatial orientation and then proceeds to behaviours that involve interactions among individuals and groups of individuals.
