Abstract
A precise definition of failure is obscured by the many different mechanisms and modes, particularly when failures result from deterioration processes causing a gradual degration of performance. Thus an engine cylinder liner may be subject to wear. Excessive wear beyond a certain limit (which is difficult to define) may result in an interaction with mating parts causing blowby of gas due to cylinder piston ring collapse, piston seizure and drastic increase in wear. This may be classified as a failure although the engine (system) could continue to function at reduced load with an increased consumption of lubricating oil.
