Abstract

In this chapter some uses of grain and straw that are not directly concerned with the production of food and drink are noted. New or more efficient uses of these raw materials are needed to enhance the value of the crop. At present large quantities of straw are burned in the field — a dismal comment on the economics and technical capabilities of ‘advanced’ societies. More straw is likely to be used, after alkali treatments, in animal feed stuffs (Chapter 14). Still there is a need for industrial uses of this annually renewed material. Handling costs are high, and a prime requirement for a straw-based industry is that producers arrange to maintain a steady supply of top quality, well stored and dried material, probably densely baled for ease of handling.
