Barley improvement

Barley

Abstract

Man’s intervention in the development of barley has spread the species around the world and unknown thousands have selected for improved agricultural varieties (Chapter 3). Cultivation and selection have given rise to many thousands of local strains. Meanwhile genes from cultivated strains have probably introgressed into the stands of wild barley, altering it and accelerating its evolution. Improvers always try to achieve a more valuable crop in terms of increased yields and a more desirable product. Improvement techniques have ranged from the magico-religious to patient breeding and selection programmes. Breeder’s immediate objectives extend from attempts to find remedies for specific defects, e.g. forms resistant to lodging, shattering, or particular pests or diseases (where relatively few genes may be involved) through to the complex aim of maximizing yield potential, where possibly most of the genome is implicated and the physiological states and morphology of the plant are relevant at all times during the life-cycle. Mendelian genetics is a useful guide for handling a few genes, but when many genes are involved breeding is more empirical, and is guided by ‘statistical genetics’. The breeding procedures used depend on individual skill and judgement; no knowledge of plant science or agricultural practices can safely be ignored.
