Spherical harmonics

  • Chapter
The Earth’s Density

Abstract

The shape of the Earth makes it desirable to use spherical polar coordinates in describing a number of its properties, including those connected with the gravitational field (Chapter 4) and with free Earth oscillations (Chapter 14). The analysis in terms of spherical polar coordinates involves consideration of spherical harmonics. The present chapter gives an outline of results needed in applications in this book. More complete analytical detail can be found in standard works on spherical harmonics.
