Cytological, Genetical, and Metabolic Changes Associated with Loss of Viability

Viability of Seeds

Abstract

It has long been known that plants produced from old seeds are more likely to produce sports than plants from new seeds. Kostoff (1935) considered the earliest relevant observation to be that of De Vries (1901) who noticed that 5-year old seeds of Oenothera gave a considerably higher proportion of phenotypic variants than fresh ones. De Vries explained this phenomenon by postulating a longer period of viability for those seeds whose hereditary constitution had been altered. Nilsson (1931), who also worked on the same species, observed that as the percentage germination fell with age, so the frequency of mutant plants increased. He explained this in a similar way to De Vries by suggesting a greater longevity of the mutant forms. In other words these workers thought that the mutant genotypes were contained in the seed population from the beginning: the period of storage simply selected out these mutant forms.
