Abstract

The four sections of this chapter are logically independent, and can be read in any order. The first three are concerned with computations that can be performed with the aid of the residue theorem, and contain an impressive body of applications of complex function theory to problems on real numbers (cf. the remarks in 2.3). The fourth section is devoted to winding numbers, supplementing the very brief treatment in 2.6.
