Abstract

The postoperative care of patients with cardiac disease regardless of the type surgery performed exhibit certain fundamental similarities. Basic physiologic principles must be followed and used as guidelines for the formulation of therapeutic regimes for all organ systems. In this discussion the subject will be divided into a systems approach covering major areas. Attempts will be made to highlight those areas of significance to the physician caring for patients following cardiac surgery. Of note is the author’s preference and emphasis on a pathophysiologic approach supported by appropriate monitoring with mechnical and pharmacologic treatment.
