Abstract

An understanding of the normal mechanism of coagulation and the body’s defense mechanisms to prevent excessive coagulation is an essential basis for the understanding of the use of anticoagulants in cardiopulmonary bypass. There are three main components to normal coagulation: the vasculature, platelets and the coagulation cascade. These all participate in an interrelated fashion in normal hemostasis.
