Abstract
The most important factors for development of cardiovascular disease are increasing age, male gender, lipoprotein disturbances, arterial hypertension and smoking. Premenopausal women have a more advantageous pattern of serum lipoproteins than males and there is a considerably lower frequency of cardiovascular disease in females than in males of comparable ages. The variation in lipoprotein distribution between genders is mainly due to their different production of sex steroids.
This review is based on the paper (in Swedish) ‘Sexualsteroider och lipoproteiner’ by Lars Wallentin, that was read at the symposium ‘Klimakteriet och dess behandling’ in Linköping, Sweden, on September 9, 1982
