Abstract
This chapter is included to give the reader who is not engaged in the minerals industry a glimpse of the methods used. In the case of non-metals there are generally two processes involved, mining and manufacturing. For metals, and increasingly for non-metals, there are three: mining, winning (or concentrating), and refining. The product then goes to the fabricator, which in an integrated company may be just to another division. Each of these steps will be briefly reviewed.
