Abstract

There are three distinct questions which can be asked about evolution and behaviour. These are: Does an animal’s behaviour influence its chances of surviving and/or reproducing and if so how? By what phylogenetic route has the behaviour evolved? and Does behaviour have a special role in the evolutionary process and if so what is it? This chapter is about the first ofthese questions; the other two are discussed in Chapters 6 and 7 respectively.
