Abstract
The origin and propagation of high energy cosmic rays presents crucial problems: The shock wave acceleration theory in interstellar space and supernova remnants breaks down near 1014 eV. Are the high-energy cosmic rays then accelerated at pulsars or accreting neutron stars? The statistically limited JACEE data and the somewhat indirect measurements of the Maryland group of Yodh indicate an increase of nuclei with Z ≥ 6 at energies ≥ 1014 eV. Various propagation models can be discriminated above 1012 eV/u, due to mutually divergent predictions. Further experiments—those under design as well as those not yet planned—which should provide answers to the above problems are outlined. At 1015 to 1016 eV, the composition appears normal, while above 10l6eV, protons appear to dominate strongly.
