Part of the book series: The Jerusalem Symposia on Quantum Chemistry and Biochemistry ((JSQC,volume 18))

Abstract

The nature of biological senescence is reviewed with regards to definitions, phenotypes, genetic controls, potential mechanisms and certain experiments relevant to somatic mutational theories. Of special relevance to the theme of this conference is the evidence for a widespread loss of proliferative homeostasis and the evidence for chromosomal instability, both of which may contribute to the pathogenesis of neoplasia and might be related to aspects of differentiation.
