Abstract
Here we present evidence that viruses alter the differentiated (luxury) function of a cell without affecting the cell’s vital (house keeping) activity. The outcome may be disturbed homeostasis and, thereby, disease. These events can occur with neither altered cell morphology nor cell destruction. Hence, viruses can induce disease by “silently” infecting cells in the absence of ordinarily expected footprints of viral infection. These events may foment the fatal physiologic breakdowns characteristic of aging.
