Abstract
Anyone who uses petroleum geochemistry must be familiar with basic chemical terminology. The objective of this chapter is to acquaint the reader with the names of common compounds and with several different conventions for drawing their structures. This objective is very different from that of a normal course in organic chemistry, in which one must also learn all the reactions of many classes of compounds. The chemical reactions of interest to us are very few and are discussed only briefly. This chapter also includes a summaiy of the basic theory behind isotope effects.
