Abstract

In the previous chapter we have considered the equations of absolute motion of N material points, i.e. the equations of motion in some inertial frame of reference. But the basic problem in celestial mechanics is the study of mutual positions of celestial bodies. Therefore, we usually consider a relative motion of those bodies, i.e. the motion with respect to some central body of the system. Usually it is a body with the greatest mass. For instance, in the solar system we determine the motion of planets with respect to the sun.
