Low-Mass X-Ray Binaries

Abstract

Low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXB’s) are luminous X-ray sources which are composed of a late-type optical companion (M ≲ 1 M) and a neutron star (or possibly a black hole). They are often referred to somewhat interchangeably as galactic bulge or Population II sources, or as Sco-like sources after the historical archetype of the group Sco X-1. A schematic of one of the best-studied systems, 4U1626-67, is shown superimposed (to scale) on a photograph of the sun’s disk in Figure 1. This is the smallest known LMXB; the optical companion is slightly larger than the sunspot group and the bow-tie shaped accretion disk is the same size as Saturn’s ring system.
