Abstract
The geological evolution of Western and Central Europe is characterized by a sequence of tectonic cycles. Orogenic events associated with suturing of continents and continental fragments were followed by periods of predominant crustal extension and rifting. Since the Silurian three major cycles are generally recognized: The Caledonian, the Hercynian and the Alpine cycle.
