Abstract
Prior to the study of isostasy in India, the question of deep structure of the earth’s crust was first raised as a result of astronomic and geodetic observations carried out by Pierre Bouguer from France during his memorable expedition to the Andes during 1735 to 1744. These observations showed that there was a marked deficiency of mass underneath the Andes.
