Abstract

In several of the sections of this volume I attempt to make a case for investigating the possible relevance of neurophysiologic factors in shaping a syndrome. When this is done, the research problem is re-formulated in the following way: First there is the question of how physiologic factors are expressed in behavior, and second, how they are subjectively experienced. These questions can, of course, also be asked in the reverse direction: how do experience and behavior alter neurophysiology? And there are the additional questions: how do the experiences and behaviors of individuals shape social interactions and their cultural interpretations, and how do social and cultural factors shape the neurophysiological responses of individuals?
