Abstract
Susto is a condition which, though unrecognized by cosmopolitan medicine, is remarkably widespread throughout many societies in Latin America. Susto has been reported from Guatemala (Adams and Rubel 1967;Gillin 1956; Logan 1979); Colombia (Leon 1963; Seijas 1972); Argentina (Palma 1973; Palma and Torres Vildoza 1974); Peru (Bolton 1981;Chiappe Costa 1979;Gillin 1947;Salby Rosas 1958; Stein 1981); Mexico (Adams and Rubel 1967; Alvarez and Lavana 1977; Kearney 1969; O’Nell and Selby 1968; Uzzell 1974; Vogt 1969); and from Mexican-Americans residing in the United States (Clark 1959; Kiev 1968; Madsen 1964; Rubel 1960; Saunders 1954 and Trotter and Chavira 1981,83).
