Abstract

The propagation of high-power laser radiation through the atmosphere is accompanied by a great variety of nonlinear phenomena, among which the effects caused by ionization and optical breakdown are of particular importance. This is, first of all, due to the threshold character of these two phenomena, which means that they are very sensitive to the combined effect of the three fundamental factors involved in the linear interaction between radiation and media, viz. molecular absorption, aerosol absorption, and the scattering of light by aerosol particles and by atmospheric turbulence
