Abstract
The construction of the chemist’s ‘glass electrode’, used to measure pH of aqueous solution, is shown in fig. 1 to illustrate the importance of the ionically conducting glass membrane separating the reference and test solutions. This design has survived over many decades and testifies to the superiority of glasses over poly-crystalline solids as membranes with a selective permeability for ionic species.
