Abstract
Crop losses caused by disease. Crops can suffer severe losses in yield and quality as a result of many factors. In broad terms, it is estimated that about 30% of world crop production is lost every year, and that about one third of this loss is due to plant diseases (International Atomic Energy Agency, 1977). Mackenzie (1983) calculated that in the United States wheat crop, there is a 14% loss annually due to fungal, bacterial and virus diseases. There have been numerous reports of the losses caused in other crops by specific pathogens (e.g. Large, 1958; Broadbent, 1964; Kingsland, 1980).
