Abstract
It was evident from discussions of the previous day that the performance of steel in concrete would attract most of the attention in this final discussion. It should be remembered, however, that there are many other types of constructions using metallic materials for which there is a considerable background of experience with life-time prediction, e.g. 1) painted, galvanized or unprotected steel in open atmospheric exposure, 2) the topic of Haagenrud’s paper*, and 3) offshore platforms subjected to corrosion fatigue. A very different type of exposure is presented in technical installations in buildings, e.g. water and effluent pipes, and heating and ventilation systems. These will often have to be updated or replaced during the life of the building, and the associated cost depends heavily on the installation practice. Built-in pipes, for example, can be difficult and costly no to replace. After having acknowledged these examples, the group continued to discuss the problems generally, though often with reference to steel in concrete.
